About Whyman Furniture: Bespoke furniture makers in Bristol
About
About
Whyman Furniture is a workshop-based practice in Bristol, run by Sam Whyman. Sam designs and makes bespoke hardwood furniture for private clients, architects and interior designers, working on a national basis.
With formal training in both industrial design and fine furniture making, Sam oversees every project personally. From the initial brief and site survey through to making and installation, each piece is handled with the same care and attention throughout.
Approach
Every piece starts with a problem to solve. How should it work, how should it feel, how should it last. Design and construction are considered together from the beginning, which shapes everything about the finished piece.
The work draws on a deep understanding of timber: how it moves, how it ages, how construction needs to account for both. Good joinery is not just technique, it is what allows a piece to perform well for generations.
The design process is rigorous but not rigid. Each commission is developed through close collaboration, pushing the design until it is right rather than settling for what is straightforward.
SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is absolutely central to the Whyman Furniture approach. All timber is sourced from sustainably managed local woodlands, most from within a 50 mile radius of the Bristol workshop.
Longevity is assured with a deep understanding of the material, construction techniques, and deeply considered design aesthetic.
