The Chord Chair was first designed in 2022 as a study in comfort, structure and material. This second iteration refines the design in the areas that mattered most. The dimensions have been reworked so the chair is much more comfortable, and the armrest and joinery have been redesigned to flow organically, with the joined sections shaped by hand into a curved surface that is a pleasure to touch.
The structure is formed through lamination, which shapes the timber into smooth, continuous curves and gives the chair its calm, confident silhouette.
A corded lumbar support is integrated into the backrest, giving targeted lower back support while keeping the chair visually light. Woven cord flexes in a way that timber does not, and the contrast between the firm laminated frame and the flexible cord brings tactility to the design. The seat pad is upholstered in sumptuous deep brown reclaimed leather. Being reclaimed, the leather has already been thoroughly broken in, leaving it beautifully soft and comfortable, with a rich deep colour and light patina.
The geometry supports multiple relaxed seating positions. Seat depth, recline angle and lumbar placement are calibrated for a natural, informal posture, so the chair works as a reading chair, a lounge chair or a statement armchair.
Edges and transitions are kept precise and restrained. There are no applied decorative details, and the interest comes from the laminated construction, the rhythm of the cord and the clarity of the overall form.
The original Chord Chair was shortlisted for both the Wood Awards and the New Furniture Makers Award. This version was shown at Decorex International 2026 as part of Aeven Collective’s “A Seat at the Table”.
