Project info

The Loom Bed was conceived as a freestanding piece of bespoke furniture, designed to bring warmth, clarity and quiet character to the bedroom. The brief was to create a bed that felt visually light and calm, while remaining robust enough for everyday use and practical long-term living. From the outset, the focus was on proportion, material integrity and thoughtful detailing, ensuring the bed would sit comfortably within a range of interior settings without dominating the space.

The design centres on a solid ash frame, chosen for its strength, durability and natural warmth. The timber is allowed to speak for itself, with the grain and tonal variation forming an integral part of the overall aesthetic. The structure is deliberately restrained, with clean lines and softened edges that give the piece a relaxed, approachable quality while maintaining a strong sense of craftsmanship. Careful attention was paid to the relationship between the legs, rails and headboard, creating a balanced silhouette that feels grounded yet refined.

A defining feature of the Loom Bed is the hand-woven rattan headboard panel. Introduced to add texture and visual softness, the rattan contrasts subtly with the solid timber frame, bringing depth and tactility to the design. Beyond its visual appeal, the headboard also provides a comfortable and supportive surface, making the bed as functional as it is considered. The weaving process itself introduces an element of traditional craft, reinforcing the handmade nature of the piece and adding a layer of detail that rewards closer inspection.

Practicality was a key consideration throughout the design and making process. The Loom Bed has been engineered for straightforward, toolless assembly, allowing it to be easily transported and reassembled without compromising strength or stability. This approach not only supports ease of use but also contributes to the longevity of the piece, ensuring it can adapt to different spaces over time. All joints and fixings are carefully integrated, maintaining the visual simplicity of the design while delivering a solid, reliable structure.

Throughout the making process, each component was carefully refined, from the shaping of the timber sections to the finishing of surfaces. The result is a bed that feels tactile and honest, with a level of detail that reflects the time and care invested in its construction. Rather than relying on decorative elements, the Loom Bed draws its character from proportion, material quality and considered craftsmanship.

The finished piece offers a calm and understated presence within the bedroom, acting as a quiet anchor rather than a statement object. Designed to age gracefully and develop character through use, the Loom Bed reflects an approach to furniture making that values longevity, usability and timeless design.
