Project info
This crafted bedroom project involved the design and making of a complete, highly considered interior scheme, with every element developed to work cohesively as part of the wider space. The brief was to create a calm, restful bedroom with generous integrated storage, while maintaining a strong sense of warmth and materiality and ensuring the bed remained the clear visual centre of the room. The overall aim was to deliver a space that felt composed and practical, yet quietly refined, supporting everyday living without visual clutter.
From the outset, the layout and hierarchy of elements within the room were carefully considered. Rather than relying on a collection of individual pieces, the project was approached as a single, integrated scheme, allowing furniture and joinery to work together seamlessly. This ensured the room felt balanced and purposeful, with each element contributing to the overall atmosphere rather than competing for attention.
A full-height veneered cherry headboard was introduced to anchor the space and define the sleeping area. This architectural element forms the visual heart of the room, framing the bed while adding depth and a sense of enclosure. Integrated bedside storage and concealed shelving were incorporated within the headboard, allowing essential items to be kept close at hand without introducing additional furniture. The rich tone and subtle grain of the cherry veneer bring warmth and character, creating a strong yet restrained backdrop that elevates the bed without overwhelming it.
Opposite the bed, bespoke wardrobes in ash and jute provide full-length storage designed to sit quietly within the room. The wardrobes were carefully proportioned to maximise capacity while maintaining a light visual presence, with detailing kept deliberately understated. The use of jute introduces texture and softness, complementing the timber finishes elsewhere in the room and reinforcing the natural, tactile quality of the scheme.
Material selection and proportion were central to the success of the project. Solid ash was used for the bed frame, chosen for its strength, durability and warm appearance. Its natural grain adds subtle variation and depth, while the clean, well-resolved joinery ensures the piece remains timeless in character. Throughout the room, muted tones and natural textures were layered to create a calm, cohesive environment that feels inviting rather than overly styled.
Careful attention was paid to how the space would be used on a daily basis. Storage was designed to be generous yet discreet, allowing the room to remain uncluttered and restful. Furniture and joinery were detailed for longevity, with an emphasis on quality materials and craftsmanship that will age well over time.
The completed bedroom achieves a balance between practicality and refinement, where bespoke furniture and architectural joinery work together to create a space that feels calm, purposeful and enduring. The result is a bedroom designed not only for visual harmony, but for long-term comfort and everyday use.
