The Lowe is crafted from English oak, with a curved headboard that wraps gently around you and sits at an angle made for the lazy mornings spent propped up in bed. It is first a bed for sleeping, and a soft rounded feel runs through every aspect of the design.
The curve begins with the timber. Each board is hand selected and deep sawn into 2mm veneers thin enough to bend, which are then laminated around a form to build the headboard layer by layer. Working the oak this way keeps the full character of solid timber in a curved shape that holds its form once set. Face veneers are cut from the same board so the colour, figure and grain flow around the curve without a break and the whole headboard reads as one piece of oak from edge to edge.
Contrasting walnut keys sit in the joinery where the flat board meets the curve, picking out the joint in a darker timber and giving the transition a considered detail that ties the headboard to the frame.
Firm springy back support comes from the laminated backrest uprights, which are built the same way as the headboard and give the bed a supportive feel when you sit up against it.
The legs are generous and oversized, each one round with a domed top that gives the bed a solid presence on the floor. Their weight balances the single sweep of the headboard above and brings the whole shape together.
The oak is grown in Wiltshire and carries warm honey tones that sit well against the walnut keys. It is finished in a silky hardwax oil that leaves the surface smooth to the touch whilst enhancing the grain.
Made to order from our Bristol workshop, the Lowe can be customised to suit any mattress size. Get in touch to discuss.
