The Origin Table was designed and made as a large bespoke conference table for Origin Coffee’s Bristol coffee shop. Measuring four metres in length, the table was conceived as a central communal piece within the space, capable of accommodating training, meetings, shared working and informal gatherings. Its scale required careful control of proportion and structure to ensure it felt purposeful rather than overwhelming.
Crafted from solid oak, the table celebrates the clarity and warmth of the timber. The design is intentionally simple and minimal, allowing the grain and natural character of the oak to define the surface. Clean lines and restrained detailing balance the substantial dimensions and chunky sections, preventing the piece from feeling heavy despite its size. The result is a table with strong presence, yet visual calm.
At four metres long, the span between the two end legs is considerable. To maintain structural integrity and prevent any risk of sag over time, the table is reinforced with a steel box section. This reinforcement provides the necessary strength to support the expansive solid oak top while keeping the underside visually clean and uninterrupted. The structure ensures the tabletop remains completely flat across its full length, even under regular use.
The legs are positioned at each end to maximise usable seating and legroom along the length of the table. This layout allows the table to function comfortably as a conference setting while also supporting more casual communal use. The generous proportions create a sense of openness, inviting multiple users without feeling crowded.
Material choice was integral to the success of the piece within its setting. The warm tone of the oak complements the Spanish tile flooring and limewashed interior of the coffee shop, reinforcing the natural, textural quality of the space. Rather than competing with the surrounding architecture, the table anchors the room through material harmony and scale.
Edges and transitions are kept crisp and well resolved, reflecting the minimal language of the design. There are no applied decorative elements; the character of the table comes from its proportion, the weight of the timber and the precision of its construction. By balancing large dimensions with controlled detailing, the design achieves clarity without excess.
The Origin Table demonstrates how careful engineering and thoughtful proportion can allow solid timber to be used at significant scale without compromise. Concealed structural reinforcement ensures long-term performance, while the restrained aesthetic maintains visual simplicity.
The finished piece acts as both functional infrastructure and focal point within the Bristol space. Robust, generous and quietly confident, the table supports daily use while reflecting a commitment to material honesty and considered craftsmanship.
