Project info
The Henge Table is a generous, low coffee table defined by weight, material presence and restrained detailing. Constructed with an English oak frame and legs, and topped with a solid Scottish elm slab, the piece brings together sustainably sourced British timbers in a clear and purposeful form.
The overall silhouette is monolithic, with a strong horizontal emphasis that anchors the space around it. The proportions are deliberate, allowing the table to feel substantial without appearing heavy. While the design takes cues from minimalist and brutalist influences, these references are expressed through careful craftsmanship rather than overt stylistic gestures. The form remains quiet and resolved, allowing the timber to define the character of the piece.
The Scottish elm slab top is central to the table’s presence. Rich in colour and variation, the grain carries natural movement and subtle figuring that gives the surface depth and individuality. Areas of light crazing and tonal shift are retained as part of the timber’s story, rather than concealed, reinforcing the material honesty of the design. Subtle live-edge elements are preserved along parts of the slab, softening the geometry of the frame and creating a considered contrast between organic and structured forms.
Supporting the elm top is a solid English oak frame, selected for its strength and clarity of grain. The legs are proportioned to complement the weight of the slab, providing stability without unnecessary bulk. Joinery is kept precise and understated, allowing the junctions to feel intentional and well resolved. The structure is designed to support the natural movement of the solid timber top over time, ensuring durability alongside visual clarity.
The table’s low stance and generous surface area make it suited to larger living spaces, where it can act as a central, grounding element. Despite its scale, the detailing remains refined, with edges carefully considered to maintain a tactile and balanced finish.
The Henge Table reflects a commitment to using sustainably sourced British timber, celebrating local materials and their inherent character. Each slab of elm carries its own variation in grain and tone, ensuring no two tables are identical.
The design also offers scope for bespoke adaptation. Alternative timber species can be specified for both frame and top, and live-edge treatments can be varied depending on the desired expression. This flexibility allows the table to be tailored to suit different interiors while retaining the integrity of the original concept.
The Henge Table demonstrates how strong form and natural material can coexist without excess. By combining solid oak construction with a characterful elm slab, the piece achieves a balance between structure and organic variation, resulting in a coffee table that feels grounded, tactile and enduring.
