Project info
The Wye Dining Set was conceived as a solid oak dining table and bench, defined by clean lines and a restrained, modern aesthetic. The intention was to create a piece that felt grounded and durable, yet visually light and uncluttered. Every detail was considered to maintain clarity of form, allowing the quality of the timber and the precision of the joinery to define the character of the set.
The dining table is crafted entirely from solid oak, selected for its strength, longevity and natural grain. The design is intentionally minimal, with a clear distinction between the tabletop and base. Concealed rails are integrated beneath the surface to keep the tabletop flat and stable over time without introducing visual interruption. By hiding the structural support within the form, the underside remains clean and uninterrupted, allowing for a precise and refined junction between the table base and leg.
This approach results in a subtle mushroom-like profile, where the top appears to sit confidently above the base without excess weight or complexity. The join detail between base and leg is left crisp and resolved, reinforcing the modern language of the piece. There are no applied elements or decorative gestures, only careful proportion and accurate joinery.
Edges throughout the table are kept clean and well defined, contributing to the overall clarity of the design. The oak is finished to enhance its natural warmth while maintaining a tactile surface suited to everyday dining. The simplicity of the form allows the material to take precedence, with grain direction and tonal variation adding depth without distraction.
The accompanying bench is designed to complement the table’s minimal structure while introducing a softer, more sculptural quality. Its backrest is formed from steam-bent oak, creating smooth, flowing lines that contrast subtly with the table’s crisp geometry. The gentle curve of the backrest supports the sitter comfortably, while the overall silhouette remains restrained and well balanced.
Knockdown joinery is incorporated into the bench, allowing it to be disassembled if required. This provides practical flexibility for transport or future relocation, without compromising strength in its assembled state. The joints are designed to be secure and accurate, ensuring long-term durability while maintaining the clean aesthetic of the piece.
The seating surface and edges are shaped with rounded, pebble-like forms to enhance comfort. These softened profiles encourage tactile engagement and ensure the bench feels inviting in use. The result is a balanced contrast between the structured precision of the table and the flowing lines of the bench.
Together, the Wye Dining Set demonstrates a disciplined approach to modern timber furniture. Solid oak construction, concealed structural elements and carefully resolved joinery create a dining set that feels both contemporary and enduring. The focus remains on proportion, material integrity and comfort, resulting in a cohesive piece designed for everyday use and long-term living.
