Project info

The Romal Rattan Door Sideboard is a large, low storage piece designed to feel light and composed within a living space. Made from pale, light-toned oak and paired with woven rattan door fronts, the piece balances solid timber construction with a sense of openness and texture.

The proportions are deliberately horizontal, allowing the sideboard to anchor a room without dominating it. Its low stance and generous length create a calm visual line, while the natural warmth of the oak softens the overall form. The woven rattan panels introduce depth and tactility, breaking up the timber surfaces and keeping the design visually light.

The rattan doors also serve a practical purpose. Their breathable construction allows HiFi equipment and electronic receivers to function effectively while stored inside the cabinet. This enables media equipment to be concealed without restricting airflow or signal, keeping the room free from unnecessary visual clutter.

A defining detail of the piece is the use of “Rotary Maloof” leg joinery. This method allows the round legs to connect directly into the carcass without the need for visible rails. By eliminating these structural interruptions, the base remains clean and minimal, reinforcing the clarity of the overall design. The leg-to-body junction is carefully resolved, allowing the legs to read as an integral part of the structure rather than an applied element.

Traditional joinery is used throughout the construction, including the panel doors and the frame and panel back. These methods provide long-term stability while maintaining a clean internal structure. The joinery is expressed through proportion and fit rather than decoration, allowing the oak grain and woven surfaces to define the character of the piece.

There is a subtle mid-century influence in the rounded legs and low profile, but the styling remains restrained. Rather than referencing a specific period, the design focuses on balanced proportion, material honesty and careful detailing. Edges are kept precise and transitions are considered, ensuring the sideboard feels resolved from every angle.

Internally, the cabinet provides generous storage suitable for living room or dining room use. The rattan doors conceal shelving while maintaining visual lightness, supporting a tidy and organised space.

The Romal Rattan Door Sideboard reflects an approach to furniture making that prioritises clarity of form, thoughtful construction and durable materials. By combining solid oak, woven rattan and carefully engineered leg joinery, the design achieves a piece that feels calm, practical and enduring within contemporary interiors.
